Eliza Quander, a second-year student at Northwestern University Pritzker School of Law—hopes to pursue a career in public interest law, with a focus on legal aid and criminal defense work. The Chicago native spent this past summer as an intern with Louisiana-based Orleans Public Defenders and also has worked at Legal Aid Chicago. She is a member of Northwestern’s Black Law Student Association and the Northwestern University Law Review. Quander also holds leadership roles with the Northwestern chapter of the National Lawyer’s Guild and Northwestern OUTLaw, which supports LGBTQ+ students and allies.

Last fall, Quander was awarded the inaugural African American History and Culture Endowed Scholarship. Created by a group of Black alumni, the scholarship provides support through a combination of outright and planned gifts. It will be awarded annually to an outstanding student who has demonstrated interest in or commitment to African American history and culture.

“This scholarship allows me to pursue a public interest career by removing financial restraints from my career path,” Quander says. “It also serves as a reminder that there is a robust community of Black alumni who are invested in my success. I feel as though I am being lifted up by my community.”
